Like most labor economists, I have thought much about the topic of discrimination and its transformation into diversity, having taught about discrimination since beginning my teaching career in the mid 1950s. The topic could not receive proper attention until we knew more about its empirical dimensions . I began writing about the topic in the mid-1980s, and accelerated my writing about UW-Madison's diversity policies and program in the late 1990s.
